| sodium potassium ATPase | <enzyme> A major transport protein of the plasma membrane. A multi unit enzyme, it moves 3 sodium ions out of the cell and 2 potassium ions in, for each ATP hydrolysed. The sodium gradient established is used for several purposes (see facilitated diffusion, action potential), while the potassium gradient is dissipated through the potassium leak channel. Must not be confused with a sodium channel. (18 Nov 1997) |

| sodium-potassium-exchanging atpase | <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the active transport system of sodium and potassium ions across the cell wall. Sodium and potassium ions are closely coupled with membrane atpase which undergoes phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, thereby providing energy for transport of these ions against concentration gradients. Chemical name: ATP phosphohydrolase (sodium-potassium-transporting) Registry number: EC 3.6.1.37 (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| hydrogen-potassium-exchanging atpase | <enzyme> An enzyme isolated from the gastric mucosa that catalyses the hydrolysis of ATP coupled with the exchange of hydrogen and potassium ions across the cell wall. Chemical name: ATP phosphohydrolase (H+/K+-transporting) Registry number: EC 3.6.1.36 (12 Dec 1998) |
| sodium ammonium ATPase | <enzyme> Aspect of atpase, EC 3.6.1.3 Registry number: EC 3.6.1.- Synonym: ammonium potassium atpase, na nh4 atpase, atpase, sodium ammonium (26 Jun 1999) |
| sodium ATPase | <enzyme> Na activated, mg dependent atpase; aspect of atpase, EC 3.6.1.3 Registry number: EC 3.6.1.- Synonym: sodium adenosine triphosphatase, na atpase, atpase, sodium, sodium-translocating atpase (26 Jun 1999) |
| potassium sodium tartrate | KNaC4H4O6;a mild saline cathartic, used as an ingredient in compound effervescent powders. Synonym: Rochelle salt, Seignette's salt, sodium potassium tartrate. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sodium-potassium pump | A membrane-bound transporter that maintains the high potassium and low sodium intracellular concentrations relative to the extracellular medium. This exchange is accomplished at the expense of cellular energy in the form of ATP. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sodium potassium tartrate | KNaC4H4O6;a mild saline cathartic, used as an ingredient in compound effervescent powders. Synonym: Rochelle salt, Seignette's salt, sodium potassium tartrate. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arsenite(antimonate)-stimulated ATPase | <enzyme> Anion pump with 2 polypeptide components (arsa and arsb); arsa is the catalytic subunit of an oxyanion-translocating atpase; arsb protein has been localised in the inner membrane of E coli; arsc protein required for arsenate resistance; reduces arsenate to arsenite Registry number: EC 3.6.1.- Synonym: arsa protein, arsb protein, ars gene product, arsc protein, anion-translocating atpase, arsenical resistance pump, oxyanion pump, arsenate reductase (26 Jun 1999) |
| ATPase | <enzyme> An enzyme that hydrolyzes ATP into ADP and phosphate. (09 Oct 1997) |

| calcium ATPase | <enzyme> Usually used of the calcium pumping ATPase present in high concentration as an integral membrane protein of the sarcoplasmic reticulum of muscle. This pump lowers the cytoplasmic calcium level and causes contraction to stop. Normal function of the pump seems to require a local phospholipid environment from which cholesterol is excluded. (18 Nov 1997) |
| calcium magnesium-atpase | <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of ATP and is activated by millimolar concentrations of either calcium or magnesium. Unlike calcium-transporting atpase it does not require the second divalent cation for its activity, and is not sensitive to orthovanadate. Registry number: EC 3.6.1.- (12 Dec 1998) |
| calcium-transporting atpase | <enzyme> An enzyme found in the sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicle membrane. During the relaxation of skeletal muscles and muscle rich in mitochondria, this enzyme catalyses the active transport of calcium into the sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles from the sarcoplasm. It requires micromolar concentrations of calcium and utilises mgatp as a substrate. Chemical name: ATP phosphohydrolase (Calcium-transporting) Registry number: EC 3.6.1.38 (12 Dec 1998) |
| vacuolar ATPase | <enzyme> From eukaryotic endomembrane systems, including vacuoles, lysosomes, golgi apparatus, chromaffin granules and coated vesicles. One of three major classes of ion transport ATPase, characterised by a multi subunit structure and a lack of a phosphorylated intermediate. Found in archaebacteria but not eubacteria, in the intracellular acidic vacuoles and in some proton pumping epithelia (e.g. Intercalated cells of kidney). A complex enzyme encoded by several genes, involved in ion translocation but does not act via phosphorylated enzyme intermediate See: P-type ATPase.
