a contagious disease of sheep caused by a poxvirus, which is characterized by fever, systemic disturbances, and widespread skin lesions on non-woolbearing areas or where the hair is not long; it is usually more severe, often fatal, in younger animals. Called also ovine smallpox and variola ovina.
