a genus of venomous centipedes (class Chilopoda). The bite of some large species may produce a severe local inflammation attended with pain, glandular enlargement, vomiting, headache, vertigo, and fever. S. he´ros and S. mor´sitans are American species; S. gigan´tea is a tropical species.
