rifamycin <drug> Antibiotic produced by Streptomyces mediterranei that acts by inhibiting prokaryotic, but not eukaryotic DNA dependent RNA synthesis. Blocks initiation, but not elongation of transcripts.

rifamycins <chemical> A group of antibiotics characterised by a chromophoric naphthohydroquinone group spanned by an aliphatic bridge not previously found in other known antibiotics. They have been isolated from fermentation broths of streptomyces mediterranei.
