a tribe of bacteria of the family Rickettsiaceae, order Rickettsiales, made up of small pleomorphic, most intracellular organisms, which are classified in three genera, Coxiella, Rickettsia, and Bartonella. They occur as parasites in arthropods and cause disease in vertebrate hosts. Pathogenic species fall generally into four groups, based upon immunologic characterization (Weil-Felix reaction): I, classic typhus (epidemic typhus, Brill-Zinsser disease, murine typhus); II, spotted fever (Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Oriental spotted fever, Flinders Island spotted fever, boutonneuse fever, rickettsialpox, Siberian tick typhus, Queensland tick typhus); III, scrub typhus (tsutsugamushi disease); and IV, miscellaneous organisms (Q fever and trench fever). Called also Rickettsiae. See also typhus.
