| malarial pigment | A dark brown, granular pigment which rotates the plane of polarised light and has other properties similar to formalin pigment; occurs in parasites, such as Plasmodium malariae, around brain capillaries, and in fixed macrophages of spleen, liver, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. See: malarial pigment stain. (05 Mar 2000) |

| melanotic pigment | <protein> Pigments largely of animal origin. High molecular weight polymers of indole quinone. Colours include black/brown, yellow, red and violet. Found in feathers, cuttle ink, human skin, hair and eyes and in cellular immune responses and wound healing in arthropods. (18 Nov 1997) |

| pigment | 1. Any material from which a dye, a paint, or the like, may be prepared; particularly, the refined and purified colouring matter ready for mixing with an appropriate vehicle. 2. <physiology> Any one of the coloured substances found in animal and vegetable tissues and fluids, as bilirubin, urobilin, chlorophyll, etc. 3. Wine flavored with species and honey. <physiology> Pigment cell, a small cell containing colouring matter, as the pigmented epithelial cells of the choroid and iris, or the pigmented connective tissue cells in the skin of fishes, reptiles, etc. Origin: L. | pigment cell of skin | Special cells in the skin and the eye that synthesise melanin pigments. Clusters of melanocytes often appear on the skin as moles. In fish and reptiles, the pigments are stored in melanosomes (chromatophores) that can be redistributed in the cytoplasm to change pigment patterns. Synonym: melanodendrocyte. Origin: melano-+ G. + kytos, a hollow (cell) (29 Sep 1997) |
