a synthetic resin, usually acrylic based, to which a high percentage (about 75 to 80 per cent) of an inert filler has been added (such as glass, quartz, or colloidal silica); filler particles are coated with a coupling agent that binds them to the resin matrix. Used chiefly in dental restorative procedures. Called also composite and composite resin.
