a nonspecific term referring to conditions associated with excessive enteric loss of plasma protein. It occurs in extensive ulceration (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease), diffuse mucosal disease (e.g., adult celiac disease) in which there is more rapid desquamation of mucosal epithelial cells, and in intestinal lymphatic obstruction (intestinal lymphangiectasia).
