the earliest developmental form in the abnormal red cell maturation sequence occurring in vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies; it corresponds to the pronormoblast, but differs from it by its larger size, abundant basophilic cytoplasm, and reticulated, unclumped nuclear chromatin. Several nucleoli are usually present.
