an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the hydroxylation at the 3 position of specific proline residues in nascent procollagen chains. The enzyme requires Fe2+, ascorbate, and α-ketoglutarate for activity. In EC nomenclature, called procollagen-proline, 3-deoxygenase.

an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the hydroxylation at the 4 position of specific proline residues in nascent procollagen chains. The enzyme requires Fe2+, ascorbate, and α-ketoglutarate for activity, and the reaction is necessary for thermal stability of the collagen triple helical structure. The enzyme is a tetramer comprising 2α and 2β chains; the β chain in monomeric form is the enzyme protein disulfide-isomerase (q.v.). In EC nomenclature, called procollagen-proline dioxygenase.
