postherpetic n. persistent burning pain and hyperesthesia along the distribution of a cutaneous nerve following an attack of herpes zoster; it may last for a few weeks or many months. It occurs in two forms, Ramsay Hunt syndrome (or herpes zoster auricularis) and herpes zoster ophthalmicus.
