a rheumatic condition which implies painful involvement of the muscles (myalgia) although the muscles themselves are not actually inflamed. PMR is characterised by severe, painful morning stiffness, especially in the shoulders and thighs. There may additionally be inflammation of the blood vessels (arteries) of the skull which is called temporal arteritis.
