bacterial meningitis caused by a pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae), usually seen in young children or the elderly. Up to half the cases are secondary to other infections, such as those of the lungs, ears, or paranasal sinuses, and reinfection may occur. The incidence is increased in asplenic or immunocompromised patients, such as those with sickle cell disease or lymphocytic leukemia.
