| 설명 | 생물체가 만들어내는 독성과 항원성을 가진 물질. 독소를 적당한 동물에 주사하면 항체인 항독소가 생성되고, 이 항독소와 독소는 특이적으로 결합한다. 세균에 의한 단백분해산물로 맹독성을 발휘나는 것에 아민이 있으나, 이것에는 항원성이 없으므로 독소가 아니다. 일반적으로 중독증상을 발현하는데 일정한 시간이 걸리며, 동물에 따라 감수성이 다른 점이 독물과 다르다. 독소에는 생물체 안에 만들어져 남아 있다가 생물체가 파괴되었을 때 독성을 갖는 내독소(endotoxins)와 생물체가 주변으로 물질을 분비하는 외독소(exotoxins)가 있다. 독소를 내는 생물체에 따라 세균성 독소 외에 동물성 독소 및 식물성 독소가 있다. 동물성 독소는 대부분 독선에서 분비되며, 뱀-전갈-거미-벌 등이 대표적인 것이다. 식물성 독소로는 리신(ricin)-아브린(abrin)-로비닌(robinin)-크로틴(crotin) 등이 있다. 세균은 인체에 영향을 미쳐 디프테리아-파상풍-성홍열-가스괴저 등을 일으키고, 또 어떤 세균과 버섯류는 생장할 때 독소를 분비, 이것을 먹으면 보툴리누스 중독-맥각 중독 등을 일으킨다. 그 밖에 물고기에도 독성을 가진 것이 있다. 인체에는 독소가 들어왔을 때 그와 결합하여 독성을 해독시키는 항독소가 혈청-림프액 등에 생긴다. |

| 설명 | 페스트균(Yersinia pestis)에 의한 급성 열성 전염병. 14세기 중기 전유럽에 대유행한 이래 흑사병(black death)이라고도 한다. 원래는 야생의 설치류(다람쥐-쥐-비버 등)의 돌림병이며 벼룩에 의하여 동물간에 유행하는데, 사람에 대한 감염원이 되는 것은 보통 밭다람쥐 등으로부터 벼룩이 감염시킨 시궁쥐(집쥐)-곰쥐 등이다. 이러한 보균동물이 있는 지방에는 풍토병적으로 존재하고 있고, 중국 동북부-중국 대륙의 오지, 몽골-중앙아시아(주로 러시아) 등은 그 전에 유행하여 보균동물이 잔류되어 있으므로 기근 등이 닥치면 유행할 가능성이 있는 것으로 간주된다. 또한 남아메리카 중부에서 북부, 아프리카 중부, 미얀마-이란-인도-베트남-캄보디아-인도네시아에서 최근 10년간에 유행한 기록이 있다. 이것은 증세가 격심하고 사망률도 높으며, 전염력이 강하기 때문에 법정전염병인 동시에 검역전염병으로 분류되어 있다. 환자로부터의 비말감염(환자가 재채기나 기침을 할 때 튀어나온 병원균에 의하여 감염됨) 또는 환자의 분비-배설물이 부착된 물품으로부터 기도감염도 있으나, 보통은 보균동물을 흡혈한 벼룩에 물려서 감염되는 경우가 많다. 발병되면 장기간의 면역을 얻는데 드물게 재발병하는 일도 있다. 일반증세는 갑자기 오한전율과 더불어 40℃ 전후의 고열을 내고 현기증-구토 등이 있으며 의식이 혼탁해진다. 잠복기는 2~5일이고, 순환기계가 강하게 침해받는다. |

| Pahvant Valley plague | <infectious disease, microbiology> A rare infection of rabbits and rodents caused by the bacteria Francisella tularensis. Francisella tularensis is found in many animals (rabbits, rodents) and may be transmitted by direct contact or via insect bite (ticks and deer-fly). Humans can also contract the illness via the direct contact with the infected animal carcass (break in the skin). The illness is characterised by an ulcerative lesion at the site of the inoculation with regional lymph node swelling, pneumonia, fever, chills, headache, muscle pains and joint stiffness. Risk factors include an exposure to rabbits or recent tick bite. A vaccine is available for high risk workers. Treatment is with streptomycin or tetracycline.
