a microorganism whose pigmentation develops as a result of exposure to light, e.g., Mycobacterium kansasii (pathogenic for humans), which is yellow-orange if grown in the light, and almost colorless if grown in the dark. See also nontuberculous mycobacteria, under mycobacterium.
