[EC 3.1.3.16] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the cleavage of phosphoryl groups from phosphoproteins. Enzymes with this activity are involved in digestion and in the regulation of a variety of enzymes undergoing phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycles. Called also protein phosphatase.
