| phosphoglycerate | <biochemistry> The molecules 2 phosphoglycerate and 3 phosphoglycerate are intermediates in glycolysis. 3 phosphoglycerate is the precursor for synthesis of phosphatidic acid and diacyl glycerol, hence of phosphatidyl phospholipids. (31 Dec 1997) |

| phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase | <enzyme> Catalyses the oxidation of 3-phosphoglyceric acid to 3-phosphohydroxy pyruvate, which can be transaminated and then hydrolyzed to give serine; minor descriptor (75-85); on-line and index medicus search alcohol oxidoreductases (75-77) and carbohydrate dehydrogenases (78-85) Registry number: EC 1.1.1.95 Synonym: phosphoglycerate oxidoreductase, 3-phosphoglycerate-nad+ 2-oxidoreductase, 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase, sera gene product (26 Jun 1999) |
| phosphoglycerate kinase | <enzyme> An enzyme catalyzing the transfer of a phosphate group from 3-phospho-d-glycerate in the presence of ATP to yield 3-phospho-d-glyceroyl phosphate and ADP. Chemical name: ATP-3-phospho-D-glycerate 1-phosphotransferase Registry number: EC 2.7.2.3 (12 Dec 1998) |
| phosphoglycerate mutase | <enzyme> An enzyme that catalyses the conversion of 2-phospho-d-glycerate to 3-phospho-d-glycerate. Chemical name: D-Phosphoglycerate 2,3-phosphomutase Registry number: EC 5.4.2.1 (12 Dec 1998) |

| phosphoglycerate |
A three-carbon molecule formed when carbon dioxide is added to ribulose biphosphate (RuBP) during the dark reaction of photosynthesis (Calvin, or Calvin-Benson Cycle). PGA is converted to PGAL, using ATP and NADPH.

| phosphoglycerate kinase |
[EC 2.7.2.3] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of 3-phosphoglycerate to form 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate. The reaction is an important energy-transducing step in carbohydrate metabolism. As written, the reaction drives gluconeogenesis; the reverse reaction generates ATP in the catabolism of glucose (see illustration at Embden-Meyerhof pathway, under pathway). Deficiency of the enzyme, an X-linked trait, causes hemolytic anemia, mental retardation, and behavioral and neurologic abnormalities.

| phosphoglycerate mutase |
[EC 5.4.2.1] an enzyme of the isomerase class that catalyzes the interconversion of 3-phosphoglycerate and 2-phosphoglycerate, a step in the Embden-Meyerhof pathway (see illustration at pathway). The enzyme requires the presence of a small amount of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate, which is also an intermediate. Called also phosphoglyceromutase.
