  • Persistent Fetal Circulation Syndrome - »õâ A syndrome of persistent PULMONARY HYPERTENSION in the newborn infant (INFANT, NEWBORN) without demonstrable HEART DISEASES. This neonatal condition can be caused by severe pulmonary vasoconstriction (reactive type), hypertrophy of pulmonary arterial muscle (hypertrophic type), or abnormally developed pulmonary arterioles (hypoplastic type). The newborn patient exhibits CYANOSIS and ACIDOSIS due to the persistence of fetal circulatory pattern of right-to-left shunting of blood through a patent ductus arteriosus (DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS, PATENT) and at times a patent foramen ovale (FORAMEN OVALE, PATENT).
Synonyms : Circulation, Persistent Fetal, Persistent Fetal Circulation
  • Persistent Hyperinsulinemia Hypoglycemia of Infancy - »õâ A form of nontransient HYPOGLYCEMIA, unique to infancy, due to autosomal recessive mutations of the sulfonylurea receptor gene on CHROMOSOME 11. Defects in the sulfonylurea receptors (ATP-BINDING CASSETTE TRANSPORTERS) on the PANCREATIC BETA CELLS prevent negative feedback of GLUCOSE-regulated INSULIN release thus resulting in HYPERINSULINEMIA. Clinical phenotype includes SEIZURES; COMA; and often large BIRTH WEIGHT for GESTATIONAL AGE.
Synonyms : Congenital Hyperinsulinism, Hyperinsulinemia Hypoglycemia of Infancy, PHHI Hypoglycemia, Hyperinsulinism, Congenital, Hypoglycemia, PHHI, Infancy Hyperinsulinemia Hypoglycemia
  • Persistent Vegetative State - »õâ Vegetative state refers to the neurocognitive status of individuals with severe brain damage, in whom physiologic functions (sleep-wake cycles, autonomic control, and breathing) persist, but awareness (including all cognitive function and emotion) is abolished.
Synonyms : PVS (Persistent Vegetative State), Persistent Unawareness State, Post-Comatose Unawareness State, Post-Traumatic Unawareness State, Postcomatose Unawareness State, Posttraumatic Unawareness State, Prolonged Post-Traumatic Unawareness, Vegetative State
