| arch of cricoid cartilage | The narrow part of the cartilage that encircles the air passage anterior to the lamina. Synonym: arcus cartilaginis cricoideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| arytenoidal articular surface of cricoid | One of two oval facets on the superiorelateral margin of the cricoid lamina for articulation with the arytenoid cartilages. Synonym: facies articularis arytenoidea cricoideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cricoid | Ring-shaped;denoting the cricoid cartilage. Origin: L. Cricoideus, fr. G. Krikos, a ring, + eidos, form (05 Mar 2000) |
| cricoid cartilage | <anatomy> The lower most of the laryngeal cartilages, may be palpated just below the thyroid prominence Adjacent the cricoid cartilage and the first tracheal ring is the cricothyroid membrane, a site used for rapid emergency airway access (cricothyroidotomy). (13 Nov 1997) |
| thyroidal articular surface of cricoid | One of two small circular facets on the lateral surface of the cricoid cartilage near the inferior margin of the junction of the arch and lamina for articulation with the inferior horns of the thyroid cartilage. Synonym: facies articularis thyroidea cricoideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lamina of cricoid cartilage | A quadrate plate forming the posterior part of the cricoid cartilage. It resembles the shield of a signet ring, the arch of the cricoid representing the remainder of the ring. Synonym: lamina cartilaginis cricoideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anal cleft | The sulcus between the buttocks (nates). Synonym: crena ani, anal cleft, crena clunium, gluteal cleft. (05 Mar 2000) |
| brachial cleft cyst | A cervical cyst arising from the persistence of ectodermal brachial cleft (groove) or endodermal pharyngeal pouches. (27 Sep 1997) |
| branchial cleft cyst | Also called a branchial cyst, this is a cavity that is a remnant from embryologic development present at birth in one side of the neck just in front of the large angulated muscle on either side (the sternocleidomastoid muscle). The cyst may not be recognised until adolescence as it enlarges its oval shape. Sometimes it develops a sinus or drainage pathway to the surface of the skin from which mucus can be expressed. Total surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Recurrence is not expected. (12 Dec 1998) |
| palate, cleft | An opening in the roof of the mouth, due to a failure of the palatal shelves to come fully together from either side of the mouth and fuse during embryonic development. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Rathke's cleft cyst | An intrasellar or suprasellar cyst lined by cuboidal epithelium derived from remnants of Rathke's pouch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gingival cleft | A fissure associated with pocket formation and lined by mixed gingival and pocket epithelium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| visceral cleft | Any cleft between two branchial (visceral) arches in the embryo. (05 Mar 2000) |
| median maxillary anterior alveolar cleft | <anatomy> An asymptomatic midline defect of the maxillary anterior ridge; the result of a failure of fusion or development of the lateral halves of the palate. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gluteal cleft | The sulcus between the buttocks (nates). Synonym: crena ani, anal cleft, crena clunium, gluteal cleft. (05 Mar 2000) |
