apneustic breathing Pauses in the respiratory cycle at full inspiration, caused by damage of the respiratory control centres in the more caudal pons.
(05 Mar 2000)
ataxic breathing Completely irregular breathing pattern, with continually variable rate and depth of breathing; results from lesions in the respiratory centres in the brainstem, extending from the dorsomedial medulla caudally to the obex.
Synonym: ataxic breathing, Biot's breathing, respiratory ataxia.
(05 Mar 2000)
Biot's breathing Completely irregular breathing pattern, with continually variable rate and depth of breathing; results from lesions in the respiratory centres in the brainstem, extending from the dorsomedial medulla caudally to the obex.
Synonym: ataxic breathing, Biot's breathing, respiratory ataxia.
(05 Mar 2000)
Biot's breathing sign <clinical sign> Irregular periods of apnea alternating with four or five deep breaths; seen with increased intracranial pressure.
(05 Mar 2000)
breathing 1. Respiration; the act of inhaling and exhaling air. "Subject to a difficulty of breathing." (Melmoth)
2. Air in gentle motion.
3. Any gentle influence or operation; inspiration; as, the breathings of the Spirit.
4. Aspiration; secret prayer. "Earnest desires and breathings after that blessed state."
5. Exercising; promotion of respiration. "Here is a lady that wants breathing too; And I have heard, you knights of Tyre Are excellent in making ladies trip." (Shak)
6. Utterance; communication or publicity by words. "I am sorry to give breathing to my purpose." (Shak)
7. Breathing place; vent.
8. Stop; pause; delay. "You shake the head at so long a breathing." (Shak)
9. Also, in a wider sense, the sound caused by the friction of the outgoing breath in the throat, mouth, etc, when the glottis is wide open; aspiration; the sound expressed by the letter h.
10. A mark to indicate aspiration or its absence. See Rough breathing, Smooth breathing, below. Breathing place. A pause. "That caesura, or breathing place, in the midst of the verse." . A vent. Breathing time, pause; relaxation. Breathing while, time sufficient for drawing breath; a short time. Rough breathing (spiritus asper) . See Asper, Smooth breathing (spiritus lenis), a mark (') indicating the absence of the sound of h, as in 'ienai (ienai).

(01 Mar 1998)
breathing bag A collapsible reservoir from which gases are inhaled and into which gases may be exhaled during general anaesthesia or artificial ventilation.
Synonym: reservoir bag.
(05 Mar 2000)
breathing exercises Therapeutic exercises aimed to deepen inspiration or expiration or even to alter the rate and rhythm of respiration.
(12 Dec 1998)
breathing rate <chest medicine, clinical sign> Also referred to as the respiratory rate.
Measured as the number of breaths taken every minute. Normal resting adult respiratory rates are from 16-20 breaths per minute.
The normal 1 year old infant can have a respiratory rate of 30 breaths per minute. Count the breaths taken in 30 seconds observing the rise and fall of the chest and then multiply this number by 2.
(27 Sep 1997)
breathing reserve The difference between the pulmonary ventilation (i.e., the volume of air breathed under ordinary resting conditions) and the maximum breathing capacity.
(05 Mar 2000)
bronchial breathing Breath sounds of a harsh or blowing quality, heard on auscultation of the chest, made by air moving in the large bronchi and barely, if at all, modified by the intervening lung; duration of the expiratory sound is as long as or longer than that of the inspiratory sound, and its pitch as high as or higher than that of the inspiratory sound; may be heard over a consolidated lung, above a pleural effusion due to an underlying compressed lung, and rarely over a pulmonary cavity; whispered pectoriloquy is another manifestation that usually can be elicited when bronchial breathing is present.
(05 Mar 2000)
paradoxical Occurring at variance with the normal rule.
(18 Nov 1997)
paradoxical contraction A tonic contraction of the anterior tibial muscles when a sudden passive dorsal flexion of the foot is made.
(05 Mar 2000)
paradoxical diaphragm phenomenon In pyopneumothorax, hydropneumothorax, and some cases of injury, the diaphragm on the affected side rises during inspiration and falls during expiration.
(05 Mar 2000)
paradoxical embolism Passage of a clot (thrombus) from a vein to an artery. When clots in veins break off (embolise) , they travel first to the right side of the heart and, normally, then to the lungs where they lodge. The lungs act as a filter to prevent the clots from entering the arterial circulation. However, when there is a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart (an atrial septal defect), a clot can cross from the right to the left side of the heart, then pass into the arteries as a paradoxical embolism. Once in the arterial circulation, a clot can travel to the brain, block a vessel there, and cause a stroke (cerebrovascular accident). Because of the risk of stroke from paradoxical embolism, it is usually recommended that even small atrial septal defects be repaired. Also called crossed embolism.
(12 Dec 1998)
paradoxical extensor reflex <clinical sign> Extension of the great toe and abduction of the other toes instead of the normal flexion reflex to plantar stimulation, considered indicative of pyramidal tract involvement ("positive" Babinski).
Synonym: Babinski reflex, Babinski's phenomenon, great-toe reflex, paradoxical extensor reflex, toe phenomenon.
