malaria caused by Plasmodium ovale; it is clinically similar to but milder than vivax malaria and is frequently found associated with infection due to P. falciparum. The infected erythrocytes assume an oblong or oval shape on a stained blood film. It most commonly occurs in sub-Saharan Africa.
