| osteoarthritis, hip | Noninflammatory degenerative disease of the hip joint which usually appears in late middle or old age. It is characterised by growth or maturational disturbances in the femoral neck and head, as well as acetabular dysplasia. A dominant symptom is pain on weight-bearing or motion. (12 Dec 1998) |
| osteoarthropathy | <orthopaedics, pathology, rheumatology> A condition which describes the broadening or thickening of the tips of the fingers (and toes) with increased lengthwise curvature of the nail and a decrease in the angle normally seen between the cuticle and the fingernail. Often this finding on physical examination can be quite subtle and easily overlooked. Clubbing may be seen in a wide variety of conditions---most of which result in a decrease in blood oxygen. Examples include: tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great vessels, atrial myxomas, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, lung cancer, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, Hodgkin's disease, cirrhosis, chronic active hepatitis and Crohn's disease. | osteoarthropathy, primary hypertrophic | A conditioned chiefly characterised by thickening of the skin of the head and distal extremities, deep folds and furrows of the skin of the forehead, cheeks, and scalp, seborrhoea, hyperhidrosis, periostosis of the long bones, digital clubbing, and spadelike enlargement of the hands and feet. It is more prevalent in the male, and is usually first evident during adolescence. It is believed to be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. (12 Dec 1998) |
