| gray layer of superior colliculus | Term applied to any one of the three major layers of gray matter of the superior colliculus that alternate with layers composed chiefly of nerve fibres: 1) the superficial gray layer of superior colliculus, above the largely white layer of the incoming fibres of the optic tract (optic layer); 2) the middle gray layer of superior colliculus, placed between the optic layer and a more deeply located layer of fibres, the stratum lemnisci; 3) the deep gray layer of superior colliculus, between the stratum lemnisci and the central gray substance surrounding the cerebral aqueduct, and containing the large nerve cells from which most of the colliculus descending connections (tectobulbar, tectopontine, and tectospinal tract) originate. Synonym: stratum griseum colliculi superioris, stratum cinereum colliculi superioris. (05 Mar 2000) |

| middle gray layer of superior colliculus | See: gray layer of superior colliculus. Molecular layer, term applied to any layer of brain tissue that contains few nerve-cell bodies and is composed largely of terminal arborizations of dendrites and axons; notable examples are the superficial layer (first layer) of the cerebral cortex and the molecular layer of cerebellum. Synonym: plexiform layer, stratum moleculare. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superficial gray layer of superior colliculus | See: gray layer of superior colliculus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep gray layer of superior colliculus | A layer of myelinated fibres, the deepest layer of the colliculus superior, delimiting the latter from the central gray substance surrounding the cerebral aqueduct. Synonym: stratum album profundum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep white layer of superior colliculus | See: gray layer of superior colliculus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| brachium of superior colliculus | A band of fibres of the optic tract bypassing the lateral geniculate body to terminate in the superior colliculus and pretectal region. Synonym: brachium colliculi superioris, brachium quadrigeminum superius, superior quadrigeminal brachium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| colliculus superior | The paired, larger, rounded anterior eminence of the laminae of mesencephalic tectum; major afferent connections of the superficial layers are the retina and striate cortex; input to deep layers of the colliculus are polymodal. Its efferent connections are with the lower brainstem and spinal cord (tectobulbar tract and tectospinal tract) and with the pulvinar and other cell groups in the caudal part of the thalamus; participates in extrageniculate visual pathway. Synonym: colliculus superior, anterior quadrigeminal body, corpus quadrigeminum anterius. (05 Mar 2000) |
| commissure of superior colliculus | Nerve fibres interconnecting corresponding and noncorresponding portions of the two superior colliculi across the midline; may contain fibres originating outside the tectum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior colliculus | The paired, larger, rounded anterior eminence of the laminae of mesencephalic tectum; major afferent connections of the superficial layers are the retina and striate cortex; input to deep layers of the colliculus are polymodal. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ganglionic layer of optic nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The inner layer of multipolar neurons in the retina consisting of the relatively large neurons that give rise to the fibres of the optic nerve. Synonym: stratum ganglionare nervi optici. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neural layer of optic retina | See: retina. (05 Mar 2000) |
| optic layer | A layer of white matter interspersed with nerve-cell bodies, immediately below the superficial gray layer of the superior colliculus, composed of myelinated fibres originating in the retina and striate cortex, the inner layer of the retina, consisting of the fibres originating from the cells of the ganglionic layer of optic nerve; in their further course these fibres combine to form the optic nerve or optic tract. Synonym: stratum opticum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| brachium of inferior colliculus | A fibre bundle passing from the inferior colliculus on either side of the brainstem along the lateral border of the superior colliculus to the posterior part of the thalamus where it enters the medial geniculate body. It forms part of the major ascending auditory pathway. Synonym: brachium colliculi inferioris, brachium quadrigeminum inferius, inferior quadrigeminal brachium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| colliculus | A small elevation above the surrounding parts. Origin: L. Mound, dim. Of collis, hill (05 Mar 2000) |
| colliculus cartilaginis arytenoideae | The elevation on the anterolateral surface of the arytenoid cartilage above the triangular fovea. Synonym: colliculus cartilaginis arytenoideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
