accessory olivary nuclei See: dorsal accessory olivary nucleus, medial accessory olivary nucleus.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial accessory olivary nucleus A detached part of the olivary nucleus medial to the latter's main body, against the lateral side of the medial lemniscus and pyramidal tract.
Synonym: nucleus olivaris accessorius medialis.

cerebello-olivary Relating to the connections of the cerebellum with the inferior olive.
(05 Mar 2000)
hilum of olivary nucleus The medially oriented opening in the folded cell layer composing the inferior olivary nucleus through which the efferent fibres of the nucleus make their exit.
Synonym: hilum nuclei olivaris.

spino-olivary tract Multiple spinal tracts terminating in the accessory olivary nuclei.
See: olivospinal tract.

superior olivary nucleus A circumscript, bipartite cell group located ventrolaterally in the lower pontine tegmentum, immediately dorsal to the trapezoid body; the nucleus receives fibres from both the ipsilateral and contralateral cochlear nuclei, and contributes fibres to the lateral (auditory) lemniscus of both sides. It is believed to be prominently involved in the function of spatial localization of sound.
Synonym: nucleus dorsalis corporis trapezoidei, oliva superior, superior olivary nucleus, superior olive.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal accessory olivary nucleus A detached part of the olivary nucleus dorsal to the latter's main body.
Synonym: nucleus olivaris accessorius dorsalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior olivary nucleus A large aggregate of small densely packed nerve cells arranged in folded laminae shaped like a purse with the opening (hilum) directed medially. It corresponds in position to the oliva, projects to all parts of the contralateral half of the cerebellar cortex by way of the olivocerebellar tract, and is the only source of cerebellar climbing fibres. Its afferent connections include fibres from the spinal cord, the dentate nucleus and motor cortex, but its major input appears to be the central tegmental tract originating from multiple nuclei at midbrain levels.
Synonym: nucleus olivaris.

acetone body <biochemistry> Any of the three compounds created by acetyl coenzyme A (acetoacetate, hydroxybutyrate, and acetone) which are water-soluble cellular fuels normally exported by the liver.
They can build up in the blood and body tissues because of starvation, untreated diabetes mellitus, or other disorders that interfere with carbohydrate metabolism. The body rids itself of ketones mainly through urine, but it rids itself of acetone through the lungs, which gives the breath a characteristic fruity odour. If ketones build up in the body long enough, they cause serious illness and coma (see ketoacidosis.)

acute inclusion body encephalitis The most common acute encephalitis, caused by HSV-1; affects persons of any age; preferentially involves the inferomedial portions of the temporal lobe and the orbital portions of the frontal lobes; pathologically, severe haemorrhagic necrosis is present along with, in the acute stages, intranuclear eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the neurons and glial cells.
Synonym: acute inclusion body encephalitis, herpes encephalitis.
