any of the enzymes of the sub-subclass pentosyltransferases [EC 2.4.2] that catalyze the phosphorolysis of a nucleoside to form the free base and a ribose (or deoxyribose) 1-phosphate as a step in the degradation of nucleic acids and nucleotides.
