a test of neutrophil microbicidal function; neutrophils are incubated with latex particles and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT). Normally phagocytosis of the particles is accompanied by reduction of NBT to a blue formazan pigment; absence of NBT reduction indicates a defect in some of the metabolic pathways involved in intracellular microbial killing, as seen in chronic granulomatous disease.
