a condition characterized by abnormal deposits of mucopolysaccharides (mucins) in the skin. The mucinoses have been classified as metabolic (myxedema, diffuse or pretibial; lichen myxedematosus; and gargoylism), secondary or catabolic (degeneration in a variety of neoplasms), and localized (follicular, papular, plaquelike, focal, and the myxoid [synovial] cyst).
