영문 instinct 한글 본능
설명   
  어떤 생물 조직체가 선천적으로 가지고 있는 동작이나 운동. 즉, 경험과 학습에 의하지 않고 선천적으로 갖춘 성능이나 반응의 복합체를 말한다. 아기가 젖을 빤다든지 병아리가 알을 깨고 나오는 행동 따위이다. 본능은 경험으로 습득할 수 없는 능력으로서 학습과 대립하여 논의되지만 실제 행동에서 본능과 학습을 구별한다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 특히 동물의 발전단계가 고등화됨에 따라서 성숙에서 오는 본능행동과 학습에서 오는 행동은 구별하기 어렵다. 꿀벌이나 비둘기가 먼 곳에서 집으로 돌아오는 것은 귀소본능 때문이라고 하지만, 이러한 행동도 여러 번 횟수를 거듭하여 촉진된다는 것이 알려졌다.
