infection of an organ or tissue by more than one microorganism, as in wound infections, abscesses, pneumonia, and rarely meningitis and endocarditis; mixtures of every type occur, eg, bacterial and viral, bacterial and fungal, and protozoan and viral. Called also polyinfection.
