an order of parasitic protozoa (class Microsporea, phylum Microspora) found in invertebrates, especially arthropods, in lower vertebrates, and rarely in higher vertebrates, which have a tendency toward maximum development and varied specialization of accessory spore organelles accompanied by a reduction of sporocysts. It comprises two suborders: Pansporoblastina and Apansporoblastina. Called also Cnidosporidia and Microsporidia.
