||

| median maxillary anterior alveolar cleft | <anatomy> An asymptomatic midline defect of the maxillary anterior ridge; the result of a failure of fusion or development of the lateral halves of the palate. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| oblique facial cleft | Congenital facial cleft from mouth to the inner canthus of the eye. Synonym: oblique facial cleft. Origin: prosopo-+ G. Schisis, fissure (05 Mar 2000) |
| facial cleft | A cleft resulting from incomplete merging or fusion of embryonic processes normally uniting in the formation of the face, e.g., cleft lip or cleft palate. Synonym: prosopoanoschisis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| velo-cardio-facial syndrome | <syndrome> Also known as shprintzen syndrome, this more than is a congenital malformation (birth defect) syndrome with cleft palate, heart defect, abnormal face, and learning problems. The condition is therefore called the velo-cardio-facial (vcf) syndrome. (the velum is the soft palate). Other less frequent features include short stature, small-than-normal head (microcephaly), mental retardation, minor ear anomalies, slender hands and digits, and inguinal hernia. The cause is usually a microdeletion in chromosome band 22q11.2, just as in digeorge syndrome. Vcf and digeorge syndromes are different clinical expressions of essentially the same chromosome defect. Of essentially the same chromosome defect. (12 Dec 1998) |
| anal cleft | The sulcus between the buttocks (nates). Synonym: crena ani, anal cleft, crena clunium, gluteal cleft. (05 Mar 2000) |
| brachial cleft cyst | A cervical cyst arising from the persistence of ectodermal brachial cleft (groove) or endodermal pharyngeal pouches. (27 Sep 1997) |
| branchial cleft cyst | Also called a branchial cyst, this is a cavity that is a remnant from embryologic development present at birth in one side of the neck just in front of the large angulated muscle on either side (the sternocleidomastoid muscle). The cyst may not be recognised until adolescence as it enlarges its oval shape. Sometimes it develops a sinus or drainage pathway to the surface of the skin from which mucus can be expressed. Total surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Recurrence is not expected. (12 Dec 1998) |
| palate, cleft | An opening in the roof of the mouth, due to a failure of the palatal shelves to come fully together from either side of the mouth and fuse during embryonic development. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Rathke's cleft cyst | An intrasellar or suprasellar cyst lined by cuboidal epithelium derived from remnants of Rathke's pouch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gingival cleft | A fissure associated with pocket formation and lined by mixed gingival and pocket epithelium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| visceral cleft | Any cleft between two branchial (visceral) arches in the embryo. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gluteal cleft | The sulcus between the buttocks (nates). Synonym: crena ani, anal cleft, crena clunium, gluteal cleft. (05 Mar 2000) |
| residual cleft | The remnants of the pituitary diverticulum that occur between the pars distalis and pars intermedia; a distinct lumen is present in some animals, but, in humans, is present only during prenatal development and sometimes in young children. Synonym: residual lumen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cholesterol cleft | A space caused by the dissolving out of cholesterol crystals in sections of tissue embedded in paraffin. (05 Mar 2000) |
