The first reported primary cases were in Marburg and Frankfurt, Germany, and Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in laboratory workers handling infected African green monkeys or their organs; secondary infection is acquired through direct physical contact with infected patients. It has been reported as occurring in Kenya, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
