(malonate) is an acid found in aconite and other plants. Malonic acid is a strong irritant: caution should be taken in handling it. Malonic acid is an inhibitor of succinate dehydrogenase, which binds to the enzyme because it is similar in structure to succinate. Once bound, no reaction occurs because malonate cannot be acted upon by succinate dehydrogenase. Malonic acid is used in the production of barbiturates.
