an autosomal recessive disorder of steroidogenesis in which deficiency of cholesterol monooxygenase (side-chain-cleaving) causes a type of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (type I). The disorder is characterized by accumulation of lipids and cholesterol in the adrenal cortex, decreased or absent steroid hormones, severe salt wasting, sexual infantilism, and male pseudohermaphroditism; the adrenal insufficiency is usually lethal. See also accompanying table. Called also cholesterol desmolase deficiency.
