The average amount of energy lost per unit of distance travelled. Gamma rays are low LET radiations, because they blast through you without losing much of their energy; where they do lose energy through collisions with matter in your body the ionisations are well spread out along the length of the radiation track - in other words, what's low is the energy density. Alpha particles are high LET, since they lose all their energy within a few microns and the density of ionisations is high.
