| laryngeal nerves | Branches of the vagus nerve (the tenth cranial nerve). The superior laryngeal nerves originate near the nodose ganglion and separate into external branches, which supply motor fibres to the cricothyroid muscles, and internal branches, which carry sensory fibres. The recurrent (inferior) laryngeal nerve originates more caudally and carries efferents to all muscles of the larynx except the cricothyroid. The laryngeal nerves and their various branches also carry sensory and autonomic fibres to the laryngeal, pharyngeal, tracheal, and cardiac regions. (12 Dec 1998) |

| communicating branch of superior laryngeal nerve with recurrent laryngeal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Branch of internal branch of superior laryngeal nerve communicating with the recurrent laryngeal nerve in the wall of the laryngopharynx supplying sensory fibres to the latter. Synonym: ramus communicans nervi laryngei recurrentis cum ramo laryngeo interno, ramus communicans nervi laryngei superioris cum nervo laryngeo recurrenti, Galen's anastomosis, Galen's nerve. | papillomatosis, laryngeal | Warty growths on the vocal cords. most common in young children. Recurrences are, unfortunately, frequent. Remission may occur after several years. Papillomatosis of the larynx can be due to the baby contracting human papilloma virus (HPV) during birth through the vaginal canal from a mother with genital warts (which are due to HPV). Each year, about 300 infants are born with the virus on their vocal cords because of maternal transmission. (12 Dec 1998) |
| recurrent laryngeal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A branch of a nerve (the vagus nerve) that comes down the neck and turns back ( recurs ) to supply the larynx (the voice box ). (12 Dec 1998) |
| granuloma, laryngeal | A polypoid granulomatous projection into the lumen of the larynx. (12 Dec 1998) |
| protective laryngeal reflex | Closure of the glottis to prevent entry of foreign substances into the respiratory tract. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subcutaneous bursa of the laryngeal prominence | The bursa located between the junction of the laminae of the thyroid cartilage and the skin. Synonym: bursa subcutanea prominentiae laryngeae, laryngeal bursa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior laryngeal artery | <anatomy, artery> Origin, superior thyroid; distribution, muscles and mucous membrane of larynx; anastomoses, cricothyroid branch of superior thyroid and terminal branches of inferior laryngeal. Synonym: arteria laryngea superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior laryngeal cavity | The upper part of the laryngeal cavity from the superior aperture to the vestibular folds, bounded anteriorly by the epiglottis, laterally by themucosa overlying the quadrangular membranes and posteriorly by the mucosa overlying the arytenoid cartilages and arytenoideus muscle. Synonym: vestibulum laryngis, atrium glottidis, superior laryngeal cavity. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior laryngeal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A branch of the vagus nerve at the inferior ganglion; at the thyroid cartilage it divides into two branches; the internal laryngeal nerve, a sensory branch which supplies the mucous membrane of the larynx superior to the vocal folds, and the external laryngeal nerve, a motor branch which supplies the inferior pharyngeal constrictor and the cricothyroid muscle. Synonym: nervus laryngeus superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superior laryngeal vein | <anatomy, vein> Vein which accompanies the superior laryngeal artery and empties into the superior thyroid vein. Synonym: vena laryngea superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior laryngeal artery | <anatomy, artery> Origin, inferior thyroid; distribution, muscles and mucous membrane of larynx; anastomoses, superior laryngeal. Synonym: arteria laryngea inferior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior laryngeal cavity | The part of the cavity of the larynx immediately below the glottis. Synonym: cavitas infraglotticum, aditus glottidis inferior, cavum infraglotticum, inferior laryngeal cavity, infraglottic space. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior laryngeal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The terminal branch of the recurrent laryngeal nerve; it supplies the laryngeal mucosa inferior to the vocal folds and all laryngeal muscles except the cricothyroid. Synonym: nervus laryngeus inferior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inferior laryngeal vein | <anatomy, vein> The vein passing from the lower part of the larynx to the plexus thyroideus impar. Synonym: vena laryngea inferior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| intermediate laryngeal cavity | Portion of the cavity of the larynx between the vestibular and vocal folds, with which the ventricles communicate. Synonym: aditus glottidis superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
