lamellipodium When amoeboid cells move they put out protuberances commonly called pseudopodia, (literally "false feet,") in the direction of movement. On a surface amoeboid cells become flattened, so that rather than being a foot, the protuberance is a sheet or lamella. Hence lamellipodium.
