||

| depression, involutional | Marked depression appearing in the involution period and characterised by hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and agitation. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| involutional | Relating to involution. (05 Mar 2000) |
| involutional depression | Depression or psychosis first occurring in the involutional years (40 to 55 for women, 50 to 65 for men). (05 Mar 2000) |
| involutional melancholia | A depressive disorder of middle life, commonly associated with the climacteric. (05 Mar 2000) |
| involutional psychosis | An obsolete term for mental disturbance occurring during the menopause or later life. (05 Mar 2000) |
| affective disorders, psychotic | Disorders in which the essential feature is a severe disturbance in mood (depression, anxiety, elation, and excitement) accompanied by psychotic symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, gross impairment in reality testing, etc. (12 Dec 1998) |
| schizophrenia and disorders with psychotic features | Marked disorders of thought (delusions, hallucinations, or other thought disorder accompanied by disordered affect or behaviour), and deterioration from a previous level of functioning. (12 Dec 1998) |
| psychotic | Relating to or affected by psychosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| psychotic disorders | Disorders in which there is gross impairment in reality testing. The individual incorrectly evaluates his or her perception and thoughts and makes incorrect inferences about reality even in the face of contrary evidence. Delusions or hallucinations are present. (12 Dec 1998) |
| psychotic manifestation | A manifestation characterised by thoughts, feelings, and behaviour evidencing a varying degree of personality disintegration and distortion or falsification of reality in various spheres; persons exhibiting such a manifestation fail in effective relationships to other people or to their work. (05 Mar 2000) |
| shared psychotic disorder | Identical or similar mental disorders, such as a paranoid fixation, usually affecting two members of the same family living together. Synonym: shared psychotic disorder. Origin: Fr. Two (05 Mar 2000) |
| induced psychotic disorder | <psychiatry> A severe mental disorder brought about by a toxic agent such as a drug or hallucinogen. See: psychosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| accelerated reaction | A response occurring in a shorter time than expected; the cutaneous manifestations occurring during the period between the second and tenth day following smallpox vaccination; because it is intermediate between a primary reaction and an immediate reaction, it is regarded as evidence of some degree of resistance. Synonym: vaccinoid reaction. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acid reaction | Any test by which an acid reaction is recognised such as the change of blue litmus paper to red, an excess of hydrogen ions over hydroxide ions in aqueous solution indicated by a pH value less than 7 (at 22캜). Compare: dissociation constant of water. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute-phase reaction | <immunology, rheumatology> Refers to the changes in synthesis of certain proteins within the serum during an inflammatory response, which provides rapid protection for the host against microorganisms via non-specific defense mechanisms. It consists of fever, an increase in inflammatory humoral factors, and an increased synthesis by hepatocytes of a number of proteins or glycoproteins usually found in the plasma; the reaction is mediated by endogenous pyrogens, the hypothalamus, adrenal hormones, and other factors.
