interstitial lung disease A general term that refers to a variety of chronic lung disorders, characterized by a dry, unproductive cough and uncomfortable breathing on exertion. The condition may result from viral, bacterial, or other infections, uremic pneumonitis, cancer, congenital or inherited disorders, or circulatory impairment.
