intercalate to insert among others. In gel electrophoresis, ethidium bromide is added to the agarose gel because it can intercalate in between the bases of a DNA molecule. As DNA moves through the gel, it picks up ethidium bromide molecules and carries them along. Ethidium bromide fluoresces in UV light. So when the gel is placed onto a UV light box, the bands of DNA will glow bright orange.
