||

| microcystic disease of renal medulla | Presence of small cysts in the renal medulla associated with anaemia, sodium depletion, and chronic renal failure. It is of two types: 1) fatal autosomal recessive or juvenile type (also called familial juvenile nephrophthisis), beginning at about age 10 with an average duration of 6 to 8 years; 2) autosomal dominant or adult type, beginning at about age 30 but with a more fulminant course. Synonym: microcystic disease of renal medulla. (05 Mar 2000) |

| vascular stripe | The stratified epithelium lining the upper part of the ligamentum spirale cochleae; it is penetrated by capillaries and is believed to be the site of production of endolymph. Synonym: stria vascularis ductus cochlearis, psalterial cord, vascular stripe. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mallear stripe | A bright line seen through the membrana tympani, produced by the attachment of the manubrium of the malleus. Synonym: mallear stripe. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pleural stripe | On a chest radiograph, the soft tissue stripe between the opacity of the aerated lung and that of the cortex of the rib. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Hensen's stripe | A band on the undersurface of the membrana tectoria of the cochlear duct. (05 Mar 2000) |
| stripe | 1. A line, or long, narrow division of anything of a different colour or structure from the ground; hence, any linear variation of colour or structure; as, a stripe, or streak, of red on a green ground; a raised stripe. 2. A pattern produced by arranging the warp threads in sets of alternating colours, or in sets presenting some other contrast of appearance. 3. A strip, or long, narrow piece attached to something of a different colour; as, a red or blue stripe sewed upon a garment. 4. A stroke or blow made with a whip, rod, scourge, or the like, such as usually leaves a mark. "Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed." (Deut. Xxv. 3) 5. A long, narrow discolouration of the skin made by the blow of a lash, rod, or the like. "Cruelty marked him with inglorious stripes." (Thomson) 6. Colour indicating a party or faction; hence, distinguishing characteristic; sign; likeness; sort; as, persons of the same political stripe. 7. The chevron on the coat of a noncommissioned officer. Stars and Stripes. See Star. Origin: OD. Strijpe a stripe, streak; akin to LG. Stripe, D. Streep, Dan. Stribe, G. Strief, striefen, MHG. Striefen to glide, march. | stripe of Gennari | A prominent white line appearing in perpendicular sections of the visual cortex (Brodmann's area 17) at about mid-thickness of the cortical gray matter, corresponding to the particularly well developed outer line of Baillarger of that cortical area, and composed largely of tangentially disposed intracortical association fibres. Synonym: Gennari's band, Gennari's stria, stripe of Gennari. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tracheal wall stripe | On a chest radiograph, the linear opacity between air in the trachea and in the right upper lobe. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bacterial outer membrane proteins | Proteins isolated from the outer membrane of bacteria. (12 Dec 1998) |
| rod outer segment | <ophthalmology, physiology> Major photoreceptor cell of vertebrate retina (about 125 million in a human eye). Columnar cells (about 40m long, 1m diameter) having three distinct regions: a region adjacent to and synapsed with, the neural layer of the retina contains the nucleus and other cytoplasmic organelles, below this is the inner segment, rich in mitochondria, that is connected through a thin neck (in which is located a ciliary body) to the outer segment. The outer segment largely consists of a stack of discs membrane infoldings that are incompletely separated in cones) that are continually replenished near the inner segment and that are shed from the distal end and phagocytosed by the pigmented epithelium. The membranes of the discs are rich in rhodopsin, the pigment that absorbs light. (03 Jul 1999) |
| rod outer segments | The portion of the retinal rod cell between the inner segment and the pigment epithelium layer of the retina. (12 Dec 1998) |
| hair cells, inner | Bulbous cells that are medially placed in one row in the organ of corti. In contrast to the outer hair cells, the inner hair cells are fewer in number, have fewer sensory hairs, and are less differentiated. (12 Dec 1998) |
| hair cells, outer | Mechanoreceptors in the organ of corti. In mammals the outer hair cells are arranged in three rows which are further from the modiolus than the single row of inner hair cells. The motile properties of the outer hair cells may contribute actively to tuning the sensitivity and frequency selectivity of the cochlea. (12 Dec 1998) |
