criminal insanity In forensic psychiatry, a term that describes the degree of mental competence and that is defined by such currently applicable legal precedents as the American Law Institute rule, Durham rule, M'Naghten rule, and the New Hampshire rule.
(05 Mar 2000)
insanity 1. The state of being insane; unsoundness or derangement of mind; madness; lunacy. "All power of fancy overreason is a degree of insanity." (Johnson) "Without grace The heart's insanity admits no cure." (Cowper)
2. Such a mental condition, as, either from the existence of delusions, or from incapacity to distinguish between right and wrong, with regard to any matter under action, does away with individual responsibility.
Synonym: Insanity, Lunacy, Madness, Derangement, Aliention, Aberration, Mania, Delirium, Frenzy, Monomania, Dementia.
Insanity is the generic term for all such diseases; lunacy has now an equal extent of meaning, though once used to denote periodical insanity; madness has the same extent, though originally referring to the rage created by the disease; derangement, alienation, are popular terms for insanity; delirium, mania, and frenzy denote excited states of the disease; dementia denotes the loss of mental power by this means; monomania is insanity upon a single subject.
Origin: L. Insanitas unsoundness; cf. Insania insanity, F. Insanite.

abnormalities, drug-induced Congenital abnormalities caused by medicinal substances or drugs of abuse given to or taken by the mother, or to which she is inadvertently exposed during the manufacture of such substances. The concept excludes abnormalities resulting from exposure to non-medicinal chemicals in the environment.

abortion, induced Intentional removal of a foetus from the uterus by any of a number of techniques. (popline, 1978)
(12 Dec 1998)
akathisia, drug-induced Motor restlessness with sensations of quivering and an urge to move about constantly resulting from the use of certain drugs, such as neuroleptic drugs, which affect the extrapyramidal region of the brain. This differs from dyskinesia, drug-induced in that long-term antipsychotic drug exposure is significantly correlated with the increased prevalence of akathisia while there is no such correlation with dyskinesia. The primary observable distinction between tardive akathisia and dyskinesia appears to be in the repetitive, stereotypy of the dyskinesic movements (lip smacking, for example), while akathisia is associated with anxiety, restlessness, and agitation (psychomotor agitation).

alpha-chymotrypsin-induced glaucoma Transient secondary glaucoma following the use of alpha-chymotrypsin in cataract extraction.

antibiotic induced gastroenteritis <pathology> A condition where the normal intestinal bacteria (useful for digestion) are killed by the use of an antibiotic resulting in symptoms.
(27 Sep 1997)
antibody induced lysis <haematology> The term is imprecise and should not be used since there is confusion as to which mechanism is involved, i.e. Natural killing or complement lysis.
See: complement lysis, natural killer cells.
(09 Feb 1998)
asthma, exercise-induced Asthma attacks following a period of exercise. Usually the induced attack is short-lived and regresses spontaneously. The magnitude of postexertional airway obstruction is strongly influenced by the environment in which exercise is performed (i.e. Inhalation of cold air during physical exertion markedly augments the severity of the airway obstruction; conversely, warm humid air blunts or abolishes it).

carbohydrate-induced hyperlipaemia type III familial hyperlipoproteinaemia, type IV familial hyperlipoproteinaemia
combined fat-and carbohydrate-induced hyperlipaemia Hyperlipoproteinaemia characterised by increased plasma levels of chylomicrons, VLDL, pre-beta-lipoproteins, and triglycerides, and slight rise of cholesterol on a normal diet, with beta-lipoproteins normal; may be accompanied by bouts of abdominal pain, hepatosplenomegaly, susceptibility to atherosclerosis, and abnormal glucose tolerance; probably autosomal recessive inheritance.
Synonym: combined fat-and carbohydrate-induced hyperlipaemia, familial hyperchylomicronaemia with hyperprebetalipoproteinaemia, mixed hyperlipaemia.
