any of several species of rabbit-sized ungulates of the genera Procavia, Dendrohyrax, and Heterohyrax, found in Africa and the Middle East; they have fat furry bodies, short legs, small ears, and short tails. Some are reservoirs for Leishmania aethiopica. Called also coney.
