either of two toxic amino acids, designated A and B, occurring in the seeds and arils of the unripe akee (q.v.); they induce hypoglycemia by inhibiting cofactors responsible for hepatic gluconeogenesis. Hypoglycin A, the more potent of the two, is sometimes referred to simply as hypoglycin.
