anemia characterized by a disproportionate reduction of red cell hemoglobin and an increased area of central pallor in the red cells. It may be hereditary (e.g., hereditary sideroblastic anemia, thalassemia minor) or acquired (e.g., iron deficiency anemia). Called also Faber's syndrome.
