too much insulin. In response to the mother's high blood sugar levels, the baby produces high levels of insulin. This, plus the high levels of blood sugar, can often cause the baby to grow too much or in abnormal patterns. This can cause problems with birth trauma or make baby overly heavy; too much insulin at birth can also cause baby to have hypoglycemia when born.
