[EC 4.1.3.5] an enzyme of the lyase class that catalyzes the condensation of acetyl coenzyme A and acetoacetyl coenzyme A to form 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA. A liver and kidney mitochondrial enzyme catalyzes the reaction as a step in ketogenesis; a cytosolic enzyme acts in the synthesis of cholesterol and other isoprenoids.
