immunoglobulin joining region Segment of light and heavy chains of mouse and human immunoglobulins where the genes for the variable region upstream join those of the constant region downstream (an important part of the antibody diversity mechanism). In the joining region of the light chain are the genes coding for amino acids 96 to 107.
(12 Dec 1998)
joining segment <molecular biology> A small DNA segment that links genes to yield a functional gene encoding an immunoglobulin.
(09 Oct 1997)
chlorethene homopolymer <chemical> Chloroethene homopolymer. A polyvinyl resin used extensively in the manufacture of plastics, including medical devices, tubing, and other packaging. It is also used as a rubber substitute. Residues are present in human body tissues.
Chemical name: Ethene, chloro-, homopolymer
(12 Dec 1998)
homopolymer <chemistry> A type of polymer (large molecule which consists of a chain of similar smaller molecules called monomers) where all of the monomers are the same thing. For example: a polypeptide which consists entirely of the amino acid lysine linked end to end, instead of many different amino acids linked end to end, would be a homopolymer.
(09 Oct 1997)
homopolymer tailing A lab technique where a nucleic acid homopolymer (a long chain of the same nucleotide over and over) is attached to the end of a piece of DNA as a part of DNA cloning. It is especially useful in cDNA cloning to get the cDNA inserted into the cloning vector -- a nucleic acid homopolymer which contains the complementary nucleotide to the cDNA tail is attached to the vector, which then pairs with the tail on the cDNA.
(09 Oct 1997)
artery of the pancreatic tail Origin, splenic artery near the left gastroepiploic; distribution, the tail of the pancreas; anastomoses, with other pancreatic arteries.
Synonym: arteria caudae pancreatis, caudal pancreatic artery.

viral tail proteins Proteins found in the tail sections of DNA and RNA viruses. It is believed that these proteins play a role in directing chain folding and assembly of polypeptide chains.
(12 Dec 1998)
comet tail sign In chest radiology, the curved appearance of pulmonary arteries and veins associated with round atelectasis, fibrosis associated with organizing pleurisy.
Synonym: comet tail sign.
(05 Mar 2000)
poly A tail <molecular biology> A sequence of adenine nucleotides that get added to the 3' end of some primary transcript messenger RNA molecules in eukaryotes during post-transcriptional processing. The added tail is believed to confer stability to the molecule.
Histone mRNA do not have poly A tail. The poly A tail is added post transcriptionally to the primary transcript as part of the nuclear processing of RNA yielding hnRNAs with 60-200 adenylate residues in the tail. In the cytoplasm the poly A tail on mRNAs is gradually reduced in length.
The function of the poly A tail is not clear but it is the basis of a useful technique for the isolation of eukaryotic mRNAs. The technique uses an affinity column with oligo(u) or oligo(dT) immobilised on a solid support. If cytoplasmic RNA is applied to such a column, poly A rich RNA (mRNA) will be retained.
