| 설명 | 손가락, 발가락의 끝에 존재하는 딱딱한 등판을 말하는데 주로 각질로 구성되어 있으며, 성장은 손톱뿌리(nail root)의 세포분열에 의해 일어난다. 대개 1주일에 1mm정도의 성장을 보이며, 빠진 손톱이 다시 자라는 데 3~5개월 가량이 소요된다. 발톱은 손톱보다 늦게 자라는 편이다. 손톱의 각부위에도 명칭이 붙여져 있으며, 그 이름은 다음과 같다. 손톱에서 가장 근위쪽에 반달모양같이 존재하는 것이 반달(lunula)인데 이 밑에 손톱뿌리가 존재한다. 또한 그 보다 근위에 있는 피부조직을 소피(cuticle=eponychium)라 부른다.  |

| hidden nail skin | 1. The thin, condensed, eleidin-rich layer of epidermis which procedes and initially covers the nail plate in the embryo. It normally degenerates by the eighth month except at the nail base where it remains as the cuticle of the nail. 2.
