herring <zoology> One of various species of fishes of the genus Clupea, and allied genera, especially. The common round or English herring (C. Harengus) of the North Atlantic. Herrings move in vast schools, coming in spring to the shores of Europe and America, where they are salted and smoked in great quantities. Herring gull The chimaera (C. Monstrosa) which follows the schools of herring. See Chimaera. The opah.

herring-worm disease Infection with roundworms of the genus anisakis. Human infection results from the consumption of fish harboring roundworm larvae. The worms may cause acute nausea and vomiting or may penetrate into the wall of the digestive tract, where they give rise to eosinophilic granulomas in the stomach, intestine, or the omentum.
